How to Choose a Ghostwriter: 7 Questions Worth Asking

Choosing a ghostwriter is a trust decision. This person will put words in your mouth, sometimes about matters your reputation depends on. A few good questions at the start can save a lot of frustration later.

First, ask to see samples in your field or close to it. A writer who has handled legal, financial, or real estate material will ramp up faster than one who has not. Samples also show you whether the writing is the kind you would be proud to publish.

Second, ask how the writer captures your voice. Look for an answer that involves listening, whether through interviews, recordings, or your past writing, and not a one-size template.

Third, ask who owns the work and who receives credit. Most ghostwriting is published under the client's name, and the agreement should say so plainly.

Fourth, ask how the writer handles confidential information. If you will be sharing client details, deal terms, or unpublished plans, you want to know how those are protected and what stays out of the piece.

Fifth, ask what review looks like. How many rounds of revision are included, and how quickly will the writer turn them around? You should approve everything before it is published.

Sixth, ask what the writer needs from you and how much of your time that takes. A writer who asks smart questions and respects your calendar is worth far more than one who asks for a long list of your hours.

Seventh, ask how the writer checks facts. Names, figures, quotes, and technical details should be verified against a source, and anything the writer cannot confirm should be flagged for you.

Notice that none of these questions asks who is the best. Best is not a measurable thing in this work. Fit is. The right ghostwriter is the one who understands your field, listens well, and makes your approval process easy. If you would like to see whether we are a fit, I welcome a conversation.
